My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I have an interest in her newest release, which I then found out was book SEVENTEEN. Being me I was all NOPE cannot do stand alone have to start at the very beginning so here I am. And I have decided after reading this one that yes. I will continue and make my way all the way up to number 17.
(sidenote: However with difficulty I got through this book, not because of the writing itself but because the library copy I had was LARGE PRINT apparently that was all we had available around here; beggars can't be choosers right? The next book I read though my poor eyes.)
Now about the book itself;
I found myself documenting a lot of quotations from it. Which means a lot of what the characters had to say I liked then, it resonated with me. That Ruth though, what a piece of work she was!
The detective Gamache himself is definitely going to evolve over his series I can tell this much and I adore his art of observation already. His team eh they will be an acquired taste I can tell. In my own studies, I know there really isn't all too much crime in Canada itself so yeah these mini unknown crimes will be very interesting how he goes about to figure out the how and the why's.
I totally adored the setting. I had the luxury of going to college in Plattsburgh, New York so I do know of Quebec, I have been there. I can picture this small town as it is laid out. I also know the hustle and bustle of Montreal too. GO HABS GO (Canadiens Hockey Team.) I eeped out loud at those mentions.
The whole thing with the basement and the snakes though? come on now no thank you. Then to later find out it was all a lie? THANKS A LOT FOR THE NIGHTMARES LADY. A deceptive character's idea.
I had an idea whom I thought it was the entire time and I was wrong! This is what always makes me give a book a higher rating when myself as a writer tries to think as whom I would have made the killer. Then I started to shift my suspicion to someone else and was still wrong.
I did have issues with some of the language but for a first novel I'm sure in her later ones she has worked some of that all out.
All in all I was impressed enough and I will go on in the series. I like the main character and I want to see him move along.
Recommended to those that like "cozy mysteries" I believe the back cover called it? Also had a gay couple. Brooding teenager. Conflicted opinions about hunting. And Art.
