This post has been edited to include the edit I added to my original review after being educated to the fact of something I had questioned about the reading.
These Toxic Things by Rachel Howzell Hall
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
"Old ladies keep the best secrets and the most horrible ones."- p. 413.
Well that was a trip.
I was supposed to read this as a buddy read. We have changed up our discussion style a bit. Then I went and read three groups in one session whoops. However I had to know. It gets that much.
Um style complaint- why is Black capitalized the entire time for skin color???
Edit: this has been explained to me since. I understand a bit better now this was my first instance of seeing it in my reading I guess. It's for acknowledgement as a social collective identity along the likes of Jews, Asians, Hispanics etc.
The rest I was like whoa wait a second what?? Serial killer up in HERE. Then side story about Mickie's own family history! Shock and awe.
All in all it was quite interesting and I enjoyed it pretty much. Some parts got a little daunting to read and I was kind of like just get to the point already.
Most of the people in her life putting the T in Toxic. Stay safe, recover and stay away from men for awhile my girl.
