Real Bad ThingsReal Bad Things by Kelly J. Ford

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This was my first reads pick for August. It took me basically the entire month to get through it. Would not recommend.

I don't even care if I am spoiling it for you now that I have told you not to even bother reading it.

It was a mess.
I'm still sitting here a day and a half after I finished it like wait huh?
I know what they did with the body yet- where is it he could not have survived that?

Okay I will try and talk about what worked?
I did like the protagonist Jane. Her mother was the devil. A true demon and her childhood with her brother Jason with that drunken whore had to be rough. Different men coming in and out of their lives constantly was not the way to grow up. Then along comes Warren. Diane finally married one of them and gave them a "stepfather." Not the fatherly figure they should have had. An abusive drunk. I lopped off a star there. Come on I cannot stand storylines with abuse on women. It was on the mother, and the kids.
Then there's the murder. At the time it looks like it was Jason that did the killing. There were 4 of the friends there at the time but Jane and Angie- totally random useless character off doing something else. Jane thinking Jason did it takes it on herself to confess to the murder after telling everyone to stick to the story. It takes a whole lot of useless chapters to find out it was actually Jane's best friend/ lover first person to be kind to her in her new school Georgia Lee. Georgia Lee works in a Pharmacy and is also a Council Woman up for re-election and deals with the Sheriffs. She is now married with children (to a man.) She had blacked out at the time of the murder but disposed of the body by herself while the other three stayed on the shore I am typically really good with imagining scenes but this one I have no clue what it would look like with the lock and dam. 25 years later you suddenly remember you murdered someone? COME ON NOW.

It just was a chore to read this entire thing.
I refuse to give something up once I have started it hoping it will somehow redeem itself and get better haha nope that was not the case with this one.

The only character that tried to get better the entire time was Benjamin the detective that was not from Maud. He didn't mention all he did to Georgia Lee as she became part of the case and in the end we find out that he did run DNA on the body finding out that it was not Warren's. We find out Jason was a serial killer WITH Diane. And in the very end he kills his mother too and it just ENDS THERE with Jane and Georgia Lee running away from Maud? Sucktastic story.

I try to always give a writer a good review being one myself but this was just REAL.BAD.

But 3 out of 5 stars isn't a bad rating?

I'm just asking out of curiosity. Did you realize at the beginning that the book wasn't for you? And if so, why did you keep reading?

I used to read every book, no matter how bad it was, because I always felt the need to finish things. Bad movies or bad books, but in the end I was always mad at myself. With time I learned that I can stop such things (books, series, movies) without feeling bad or like a failure.
